Even after organizations have been pursuing the goals of "diversity and inclusion" for decades, women and minorities remain underrepresented at the top. In this presentation, Professor Kenji Yoshino contended that one of the headwinds such groups face is the pressure to "cover," or to downplay their outsider attributes to blend into the mainstream. Drawing on survey data, he demonstrated the negative effect such covering demands have on both individuals and organizations. He argued for a more authentic workplace culture that would benefit everyone – even straight, white men. He then offered concrete and actionable solutions for managers who seek to create and sustain that culture. This presentation drew on Professor Yoshino's first book – Covering (2006) – as well as more work he did with the management consultancy Deloitte from 2013-15.
