Entrepreneurs seeking early-stage funding have seen it get harder to come by in the past year. Just 554 early-stage deals closed in the US in the second quarter of 2016 – down from 743 in the same period last year, according to PitchBook. But dwindling capital isn’t the problem. Venture-capital funds remain flush with cash, and valuations have not come down appreciably, but as those investors have seen the ranks of unicorn startups (those valued at $1 billion or more) shrink and the IPO market run dry, they are simply being more deliberate with their investments.
